Can You Apply for a Boiler Grant After a Previous ECO Installation? UK Guide 2026
Yes. A previous ECO installation does not automatically stop you from applying for further boiler support. You may still qualify if the earlier work involved a different measure, such as insulation, or if a previously funded boiler has since become eligible for repair or replacement under current rules.
A new application is assessed using today’s household, property and heating-system circumstances, including previous measures, your EPC or SAP rating and the boiler’s present condition.

Check your ECO4 eligibility
Answer a few quick questions to see whether your household may qualify for ECO4 support.
Quick answer
You can apply for a boiler grant after previous ECO work, but approval is not automatic. Earlier insulation, controls or other measures normally do not create a lifetime ban. A previously funded boiler may also be considered again if it is now broken beyond economical repair or qualifies as an inefficient heating-system upgrade. However, the same installation cannot be funded twice, and ECO4 funding cannot be blended with another government grant for the same measure. Eligibility is reassessed using current benefits or ECO4 Flex criteria, tenure, property rating and heating condition. Even when the rules are met, an energy supplier decides whether to fund the project and whether a customer contribution is required.

ToggleDoes previous ECO work affect eligibility?
The key question is not simply whether the address has received ECO funding before. It is whether the household, property and proposed measure meet the current rules.
ECO4 uses a whole-house approach. Previous improvements may help, but they can also reduce eligibility if they raised the home above the qualifying energy band.
ECO4 currently runs until 31 December 2026. It is an obligation placed on energy suppliers, rather than a fixed grant that every eligible household can demand. Suppliers choose which projects to support, how much funding to provide and whether the customer must contribute.
| Previous situation | Can you apply again? | Likely position |
|---|---|---|
| Previous loft, cavity-wall or other insulation | Usually | Heating support may be considered after a fresh assessment |
| Previous heating controls | Possibly | The boiler must meet current repair, replacement or upgrade rules |
| ECO-funded condensing boiler still working | Unlikely | A working, efficient boiler is not normally replaced simply because it is older |
| ECO-funded boiler now broken beyond economical repair | Possibly | Replacement may qualify, subject to supplier funding and the scheme cap |
| Current boiler is non-condensing | Possibly | It may qualify as an inefficient heating-system upgrade |
| Previous government-funded heat pump or biomass boiler | Restricted | The same low-carbon system cannot receive another Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant |
| Previous work is defective | Seek redress first | Use the warranty, installer, guarantee provider or TrustMark complaints route |
These outcomes reflect Ofgem’s current distinctions between boiler repair, broken-boiler replacement, inefficient-heating upgrades and repeat low-carbon funding.
When can a second application succeed?
The earlier work was different. A property that received insulation can later be assessed for heating support. ECO4 and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme may also be used one after the other for different measures, provided the first project is complete and the same work is not funded twice.
The boiler now meets a recognised measure category. Ofgem distinguishes between boiler repair, replacement and inefficient-boiler upgrade. A condensing boiler is treated as efficient; replacement generally requires it to be broken and not economically repairable. A non-condensing boiler may be considered for an upgrade.
Your circumstances have changed. A household that did not qualify before may now qualify through standard ECO4 criteria or ECO4 Flex.
What if the previous ECO installation was a boiler?
A previous boiler grant receives closer scrutiny than earlier insulation.
If the existing boiler is working and condensing, another like-for-like ECO boiler is unlikely. Age or an expired warranty is not enough on its own.
If the boiler is broken, an engineer must establish whether it can be economically repaired. Broken efficient heating-system replacements are subject to a national cap, so technical eligibility still does not guarantee funding.
If the boiler is non-condensing, it may instead qualify as an inefficient heating-system upgrade. The assessor should record its make, model, fuel, efficiency and condition using the required heating evidence.
Where the problem appears to result from poor installation, use the warranty or complaints process first. ECO4 replacement boilers must have at least a two-year installer-supplied warranty, while gas boiler work must be completed by a Gas Safe registered business.
Keep the contract, warranty, post-installation declaration and Building Regulations Compliance Certificate.
What if the previous work was insulation?
Previous insulation is usually less of a barrier and may make a heating upgrade more suitable.
However, earlier loft, cavity-wall, solid-wall or room-in-roof insulation may have improved the home’s energy rating. Owner-occupied homes normally need an EPC rating of D, E, F or G; privately rented homes generally need E, F or G.
If the property is now rated C or above, standard ECO4 eligibility may no longer apply.
Give the assessor paperwork showing what was installed, when it was completed and who funded it.
Who may qualify under ECO4?
Private-household eligibility commonly comes through:
- Universal Credit
- Pension Credit
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Housing Benefit
- Qualifying Child Benefit
Some Warm Home Discount recipients may also qualify. ECO4 Flex provides additional routes for households meeting income, health or vulnerability criteria.
Tenure affects the rules. Owner-occupiers, private tenants with landlord permission and some social-housing occupants can receive support, but qualifying energy bands and permitted measures differ.
Ordinary boiler repair or replacement is generally restricted in private rented homes, although renewable heating, first-time central heating and certain wider retrofit packages may be allowed.
ECO4 or the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
ECO4 may support insulation, controls, heating upgrades and limited boiler repairs or replacements for eligible households.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is different. It helps property owners in England and Wales replace fossil-fuel or direct-electric heating with eligible low-carbon systems.
Previous ECO-funded insulation does not prevent a Boiler Upgrade Scheme application. GOV.UK confirms that a property may remain eligible after receiving funding for energy-efficiency work such as insulation.
A property cannot receive another BUS grant if government support has already funded the heat pump or biomass boiler itself.
How to apply after previous ECO work
- Find the earlier paperwork. Gather contracts, warranties, guarantees, declarations and compliance certificates.
- Check the current EPC. Use it as a starting point, but expect a new retrofit assessment.
- Document the fault. Keep service records, fault codes and any engineer’s report about whether the boiler can be repaired economically.
- Check household eligibility. Review qualifying benefits and ask your council whether it operates ECO4 Flex.
- Request a proper assessment. Avoid providers promising a “free boiler” before checking the property and household.
- Review the proposed package. Confirm the measures, customer contribution, warranties, installer credentials and funding provider.
- Sign only when satisfied. Read the contract and sign the post-installation declaration after the work is complete.
Costs, contributions and potential savings
There is no standard ECO boiler-grant amount. Funding may cover all, part or none of the cost, depending on the supplier, project score and work required. A home survey is necessary for an accurate quotation.
| Route | Typical support or cost | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| ECO4 boiler measure | No fixed public amount | Funding can be full or partial; eligibility does not guarantee installation |
| Self-funded like-for-like gas combi replacement | Around £2,500–£4,000 | Pipework, controls, relocation and system cleaning can increase the price |
| BUS air-source or ground-source heat pump | £7,500 grant | Extra £1,500 until March 2027 for qualifying oil or LPG off-grid homes |
| BUS biomass boiler | £5,000 grant | Limited to eligible rural, off-gas-grid properties |
| BUS air-to-air heat pump | £2,500 grant | Must replace the existing eligible heating system |
The replacement-boiler range is an indicative 2026 market estimate, while the Boiler Upgrade Scheme figures are the current official grant amounts.
Energy Saving Trust gives an average cost of about £3,700 for replacing a G-rated gas boiler with an A-rated model and thermostatic radiator valves. It estimates potential savings of around £420 a year in Great Britain when upgrading from a G-rated boiler to an A-rated boiler with full controls.
A modern condensing boiler would normally offer a smaller efficiency gain, so do not treat that saving as guaranteed.
Why the installer and assessment matter
Correct specification affects efficiency, comfort, reliability and safety. The assessment should consider:
- The property’s calculated heat demand
- Appropriate boiler output
- Heating controls
- Radiator performance
- Existing pipework and system condition
- Hydraulic balancing and commissioning
Gas work must be completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Low-carbon heating requires an MCS-certified installer. Most ECO measures must be delivered through TrustMark-registered businesses and follow applicable PAS retrofit standards.
Ask for the assessment, design, commissioning records, warranties and handover documents.

Check my current eligibilityConclusion:
You can apply for a boiler grant after a previous ECO installation, but the property is not automatically entitled to repeat funding. A fresh decision is based on the current household, property rating, heating system and proposed measure.
Your prospects are strongest where the earlier work was different, the project is complete and the boiler meets current broken or inefficient-heating rules. They are weakest where an efficient boiler still works or funding would be duplicated.
Gather your paperwork and arrange a proper eligibility and technical assessment before assuming a second grant is available.
