What affects a solar panel installation quote?
The panel count is only one part of the price. A competent installer should assess the following factors.
Roof size, direction and shade. A clear south-facing roof usually gives the strongest annual output. East- and west-facing roofs can still work well but may produce around 15–20% less than an equivalent south-facing array. Nearby trees, chimneys and buildings can also reduce generation.
Roof condition and material. Slate, fragile tiles, flat roofs and roofs needing repair can increase labour and mounting costs. It is generally better to repair an ageing roof before installing panels rather than paying to remove and refit the system later. Flat roofs may also require additional structural checks and weighted mounting equipment.
Scaffolding and access. Building height, conservatories, extensions, restricted access and panels installed across several roof elevations can change the cost. Confirm that safe scaffolding and access are included rather than left as an undefined extra.
Electrical work. Long cable routes, an outdated consumer unit, earthing upgrades or a detached garage may add cost. The quote should explain how unexpected remedial work will be handled.

What should a complete solar quote include?
Look for an itemised written proposal containing:
- Panel quantity, manufacturer, model, wattage and product warranty.
- Total array size in kilowatt peak, or kWp.
- Inverter model, rated output, proposed location and warranty.
- Battery model, usable capacity, power rating, warranty and location, when included.

- Estimated annual generation in kWh and the assumptions used.
- Expected self-consumption, export, savings and payback assumptions.
