What does an MCS certificate prove?

The certificate connects the property, commissioning date, system and certified contractor to the MCS Installation Database. It proves a certified process; it does not guarantee annual output, which still depends on roof orientation, shading, weather and equipment condition.

It belongs in a handover pack containing commissioning records, maintenance information, manuals, warranties and relevant incentive documents. MCS requires the certificate to be generated only after full installation and commissioning.

Is an MCS certificate a legal requirement?

No. MCS states that a certificate is not a mandatory legal requirement simply for a solar installation to exist. However, that does not make it unimportant.

In England, Scotland and Wales, SEG applicants must show MCS certification or an accepted equivalent and need a meter capable of half-hourly export readings, usually a smart meter. The export supplier may differ from the household’s electricity supplier.

Planning, Building Regulations and network duties remain separate. Many roof installations are permitted development, but conditions and exceptions apply.

How do you get an MCS certificate for solar panels?

1. Choose the installer before choosing the certificate

Check the official MCS directory and confirm the contractor is certified for solar PV. Match the legal company name rather than relying on a website logo.

2. Confirm the products and scope

The contract should identify the equipment and state who handles design, commissioning, DNO paperwork, Building Regulations, warranties and certification.

3. Complete the survey and system design

The survey should cover roof condition, structural loading, shading, cable routes, inverter position, fire safety and predicted generation. MCS requires roof checks, wind-loading evidence, compatible components and documented commissioning.

4. Installation and commissioning

After installation, the contractor tests and commissions the system. Registration must happen only once the system is fully installed and operational.

5. Receive the certificate and handover pack

The contractor must register the installation on the MCS database and generate the certificate no later than 10 working days after commissioning. The certificate must then be sent to the customer for inclusion in the handover pack.

Check the name, address, commissioning date, installer, system capacity and equipment against your quotation and product labels. Raise errors immediately; incorrect details can delay export applications or a future sale.

What if your MCS certificate is missing?

First, contact the original installer. The system may already be registered and the contractor may only need to resend the PDF.

If the installer has ceased trading or cannot help, use the official MCS certificate request process. MCS may request proof that you own or occupy the property before releasing or amending a record.

A lost certificate and an unregistered installation are different. A copy of an existing record is largely administrative; a non-certified job cannot normally be inspected later and given retrospective MCS certification.

Gather the contract, invoice, photographs, serial numbers, electrical certificate, DNO correspondence and warranties. Contact MCS, the certification body and your export supplier. Electrical or Building Regulations certificates do not substitute for MCS.

Installation quality affects generation, roof weather-tightness, electrical safety, fire risk, equipment life and warranties. A strong installer explains the design, assesses shading, sizes the inverter, plans cable routes, checks the roof and completes the paperwork.

Be cautious where a salesperson promises that certification will be arranged later, claims another company can “sign off” the work afterwards or avoids naming the certified contracting business. Retrospective certification is not a reliable rescue plan.
